If you're trying to unpack and heal from Christian religious trauma, a thing you really need to understand (if you don't already) is that you were probably misled about Judaism a lot. Christianity generally tries to paint itself as the self-evident successor of Judaism, and one of the ways it does this is by painting Judaism as Christianity Without Jesus.

In reality, Judaism is practiced very differently from Christianity, and Jews have a very different relationship to their Bible than Christians have to theirs. Just about everything you'll hear about Judaism from Christians is total hogwash - literally, it's Christian propaganda. Christianity as most of us know it was shaped by the Roman Empire's political agendas, and that's a huge reason why it's the way it is.

Jews and Jewishness are not the exception to the things traumatizing Christian groups are wrong about.

In the same vein as the need to unpack the sexism, racism, homophobia, ableism, and more that are taught through a traumatizing Christian worldview and upbringing, you need to unpack the antisemitism it proclaimed. The specific brands of Christianity that traumatized you were wrong about so many things, please recognize that what they told you about Judaism is also wrong.

Some practical questions you can ask when unpacking beliefs about Jews, Judaism, and Jewishness:

  1. Who told me this?
    a. Was it Jews or Jewish sources?
    b. Or is the story being told by someone else?
    c. If so, who, and what frameworks are they bringing?
    d. Do they frame themselves as the successors to Judaism and/or Judiasm as "incomplete" or "outdated" or an "old covenant" or use equivalent language?
  2. Does this belief or idea assume one belief or practice of all Jews?
    a. Is this belief taking into consideration the cultural, social, ethnic, gender, denominational, and other forms of diversity within the Jewish world?
    b. Does this belief regard Judiasm as a static, unevolving system, or does it engage with it as a dynamic tradition?
  3. Where do I get my ideas about Jewishness from more broadly and how is this specific idea or belief being contextualized?
    a. What sources around the Jewish community have I interacted with, and does this include sources from actual Jews?
    b. What agendas or frameworks do my sources around Jewishness have more broadly?
    c. If my sources generally cast Jews, Judiasm, and Jewishness in a negative light, what motive or dynamic might be driving them to do so?

A Christmas Carol never even says that Scrooge gives up anything at all, or even somehow stops being super-rich.  He just stops being a dick about it and starts using his wealth to help people.  Scrooge isn’t even written as an indictment of rich people, since plenty others appear in the story and are presented as perfectly nice people.  Scrooge is a miser.  He doesn’t even use his money to help himself, which is called out as the reason he dies within the year.  Learning to care for himself is just as much part of the Ghosts’ lessons as learning to care for other people.

how dare Charles Dickens, a man once sent to work in a factory at age 12 while his father was in debtors’ prison, inflict such Wokery upon us as “caring about the poor”
